What is Galvanised Steel?
Galvanised steel is steel that has been coated with a protective layer of zinc. This involves a hot-dip process where the steel is submerged in molten zinc, which forms a series of zinc-iron alloy layers that protect the underlying steel. This zinc coating extends the lifespan of the galvanized metal, preventing rusting and corrosion by acting as a physical barrier that stops oxygen and moisture from reaching the steel beneath.
The zinc layer also corrodes faster than the underlying steel. This process, known as sacrificial protection, reinforces the protective barrier that the zinc coating provides, preventing corrosion from reaching the steel beneath.
