What is Galvanised Steel?
Galvanised steel is carbon steel coated with a layer of zinc to help protect the underlying steel from corrosion.
The zinc coating acts as a protective barrier between the steel and the surrounding environment. If the coating becomes damaged, the zinc can also help protect exposed areas of steel through a process known as sacrificial protection, helping reduce the likelihood of corrosion reaching the steel beneath.
Because of these characteristics, galvanised steel is commonly used in fencing, structural steelwork, infrastructure, fabrication projects, agricultural applications and other environments exposed to weather and moisture.
The additional corrosion protection provided by the zinc coating can help extend service life and reduce maintenance requirements compared with untreated carbon steel in suitable applications.
